In ABA practice, data collection is useful but not required by all plans.

Useful but not required

Data collection provides objective evidence to guide decisions about behavior change. By recording how often a behavior occurs, how long it lasts, or how many prompts are needed, you create a record you can analyze to see if the intervention is working, when to adjust strategies, and how to show progress to others. Because of this, it’s extremely useful across ABA work and is a common part of many plans. However, not every plan explicitly requires formal data collection; some plans may emphasize qualitative observations or a focus on skill acquisition where formal data sheets aren’t spelled out as a requirement. Data collection is still valuable and generally recommended, but the plan itself isn’t always mandating it.
